History
Entrepreneurial drive and a passion
for food has made Discovery Foods the nation’s leading producer
of fresh frozen potstickers. Founded in 1986 by brothers Clarence
and Alfred Mou, the company has grown from one employee making
dumplings by hand to 130 employees and 40,000 square feet of production
facilities producing a half million dumplings daily.
Discovery Foods’ incubation began in 1972 after the Mou family emigrated from Taipei, Taiwan to settle in South San Francisco. They soon opened Happy Boy’s Drive-In, the first of four restaurants they would own and operate.
As with many immigrants, the restaurant business provided an opportunity
to achieve the American dream. In the early 1980s, the Mou Family began
selling their handmade potstickers at their Countrywood Dim Sum restaurant
in Walnut Creek, California. The potstickers included cooking instructions
and recipe ideas. When customers began asking for larger quantities
and urging the family to expand the business, Clarence saw an emerging
niche market — fresh, tasty, versatile dumplings for everyday
meals.
While attending UC Berkeley, Clarence developed a business plan, and in 1986 Discovery Foods was born. The first production facility opened in Emeryville, California with one employee.
The family’s Potstickers became Discovery’s first product. Ling Ling takes its name from a panda bear — Ling-Ling — presented to the U.S. by the Chinese government in 1972 to celebrate the opening of political relations between the two governments.
Discovery Foods went from start-up to established when Alfred
convinced club stores to carry Ling Ling Potstickers. The business rapidly
expanded, and Discovery quickly grew to become the industry
leader. Today, as the president of Discovery Foods, Clarence continues to foster the same entrepreneurial vision started over 20 years ago.
